What is Mental Health?
Mental health is more than the absence of conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. It's also about having a strong sense of wellbeing — feeling good in yourself and functioning well in your day-to-day life.
Positive mental health helps you:
-
Enjoy life’s pleasures
-
Cope with normal stressors
-
Believe in your own abilities
-
Work and study productively
-
Build and maintain relationships
However, mental wellbeing can be compromised when negative emotions become overwhelming or long-lasting, interfering with your daily life.
If you’re finding it hard to cope, it can help to talk. Whether it’s a friend, family member, counsellor, or GP — opening up is a powerful step toward recovery.
Need Help Now?
If you need immediate support, speak to your GP or reach out to one of the many confidential, non-judgemental helplines available.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing
Promoted by Mental Health Ireland
There are five simple, evidence-based actions you can take to improve your mental health and wellbeing:
1. Connect
Stay connected with the people around you — family, friends, neighbours, and colleagues. Nurturing relationships gives us a sense of belonging and support.
2. Be Active
Find physical activities that you enjoy and that suit your lifestyle. Even a short walk can lift your mood and reduce anxiety.
3. Take Notice
Be present. Notice the world around you and how you're feeling. Appreciate small moments and practice mindfulness to enhance your awareness and gratitude.
4. Keep Learning
Challenge yourself. Try new things or revisit old hobbies. Learning boosts confidence and helps you stay mentally sharp.
5. Give
Acts of kindness, whether big or small, can increase happiness and create a sense of connection. Volunteer, help a neighbour, or simply offer a smile.
