Flu Vaccine Information
What is flu?
Flu (influenza) is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads quickly through droplets in the air. While most people recover in about a week, it can cause serious illness in vulnerable groups.
Why get vaccinated?
The flu vaccine offers effective protection against the most common strains of flu. Because flu strains change yearly and immunity fades over time, annual vaccination is recommended—especially for those in high-risk groups.
Who Should Get the Flu Vaccine?
We strongly recommend flu vaccination for the following at-risk groups:
-
People aged 65 and over
-
Pregnant women
-
Adults and children with long-term medical conditions, including:
-
Diabetes
-
Heart, liver, kidney, or lung disease (including asthma and COPD)
-
Neurological conditions
-
Cancer
-
-
Individuals with weakened immune systems
-
People with Down syndrome
-
Persons with a BMI over 40
-
Residents in nursing homes and long-stay care facilities
-
Healthcare workers
-
Carers and household contacts of people at high medical risk
-
People in regular close contact with poultry, waterfowl, or pigs
Please note: Household contacts of people not in high-risk groups (such as healthy individuals over 65, pregnant women, or healthcare workers) are not eligible for the HSE-provided free flu vaccine. A private vaccine may be required.
Important Information Before You Book
You should NOT get the flu vaccine if:
-
You’ve had a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose or any ingredient in the vaccine.
-
You’re currently taking combination checkpoint inhibitors (e.g. ipilimumab + nivolumab).
Vaccination should be postponed if you currently have an acute illness.
Ready to get vaccinated?
Contact reception to book your appointment with our nurse, or speak with your GP to discuss your vaccine needs.
Your health is our priority—let’s protect it together.
Pneumococcal Vaccine (PPV23)
Pneumococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can cause pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. It poses a significant risk of severe illness and death, especially in vulnerable groups such as the very young, the elderly, and those with certain medical conditions.
At our clinic, we provide the Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPV23) to protect against pneumococcal disease in eligible individuals.
Who Should Get the Pneumococcal Vaccine?
We recommend PPV23 vaccination for:
All adults aged 65 years and over
Anyone aged 2 years and over with:
-
Diabetes
-
Chronic lung disease (e.g. COPD, severe asthma)
-
Heart disease
-
Liver disease
-
Kidney disease
-
Chronic neurological condition
-
A history of invasive pneumococcal disease (in children aged 2–5 years)
-
Coeliac disease
-
Down syndrome
-
Cochlear implants or those about to receive one
-
Immunocompromised conditions, including cancer treatment
-
HIV infection
-
Absent or non-functioning spleen
-
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, including those due to skull fractures or neurosurgery
-
Intracranial shunt
Who Does Not Need This Vaccine?
The PPV23 vaccine is not recommended for healthy children and adults, as their risk of serious pneumococcal disease is low.
